Nashville Bestville

Nashville was AAHHHMAAAYYYZZZIIIINNGGGG!!

Why I loved Nashville:

1) live music everywhere you look!
2) Honky Tonks with extremely talented singers
3) BBQ food
4) country music baaallarrring everywhere
5) tall country boys (ladies over 5'6" this place is MECCA!  Musicians+over 6'+good clothes=MECCA)
6) Popsicles from Las Paletas (Nutella for moi)
7) 21st street shops!

Erin's Picks

1) Blue Bird Cafe

The food was ehh but the music was fantastic!  We heard 5 musicians play songs from various genres (comedy, pop, country).  They sat in a circle with their own mikes and sang one song each and took turns.  They sang 4-5 songs each.  AND (90's girl freak out) Leigh Nash the lead singer from Sixpence None the Richer was there!  She sang her own stuff, a George Jones cover of Always Get Lucky With You and...wait for it...KISS ME!  My fav song from 2nd grade when I did a ballet dance to that song!  It was the coolest thing ever!  As a creative girl (dancer for life) I appreciate watching artists create.  It was tres fab!

2) Las Patelas

A popsicle place!  I loved my Nutella popsicle!  There were two different categories of popsicles:  fruity & creamy.  Everyone loved their popsicle.  This was down by Vanderbilt & Belmont.  I actually physically miss the popsicle.  (And my crepe from Nawlins but that's a different story)

3) Union Station Hotel

Totally glam hotel!  We usually stay in the cheapest hotel possible (not my choice) but this time we got to stay in a classy establishment complete with robes (!!) and C.O. Bigelow body products!  (We totally Ross Gellared the place).  This place looked like a Gatsby hotel!  It was totally done in the original Art Deco style that I love!  The hotel was originally a train station and a major train port during WWII.  The hotel is actually haunted and the hotel won't rent out room 711.  Room 711 is next to the gym...needless to say Dylan didn't visit the gym during the night time hours.  This hotel was the love child of Jay Gatsby's house and the Tower of Terror.

Inside our Hotel!  Gorg!

4) Broadway

Walking down this street is the visualization of Jason Aldean's Crazy Town!  Just wow!  I love live music and this is the place to go!

Broadway at Nite
5) Country Music Hall of Fame

I was actually surprised that there weren't more exhibits and artifacts.  There was a fantastic Reba display, a beautiful Carrie Underwood Blown Away Display (all her costumes and pictures from the tour.  I went to a concert on the tour and lerved it!  Carrie is worth every dime to see her)  Then, we got to see Kellie Pickler's DWTS Mirrorball Trophy!  My dad loves this show and was pumped to see it!

6) Ryman Auditorium

Very cool!  All old-school country music history!  Of course there were Dolly things here and I was stoked!

7) Grand Ole Opry

Fabulous!  Dylan (not a huge museum guy) even loved this place!  We got to stand on the same circle where all the singers stand!  It was the coolest thing ever!!  I was like EEEK Carrie Underwood stood here!  Dolly Parton stood here!  Keith Urban stood here!  Terri Clark stood here!  Darius Rucker stood here!  Jason Aldean stood here!  Josh Turner stood here!  Everyone stood here!

Of course since we're NJians we found an outlet mall and did some damage!  You can take us out of NJ but you can't take NJ out of us!

Nashville was amazing!  I totally want to go back.  Piece of advice though, if you have someone in your party that is under 21 you can't go ANYWHERE after 8 pm.

Road Trippin'

Howdy Y'all!!  Writing from Tennessee today and I couldn't be more excited!  We arrived in Pigeon Forge last night, err this morning at 12:30 am to spend the day in Dollywood!!

Let me back up before we begin this post about my crazy family's adventure driving down (10.5 hours) from NJ to VA to TN!  Why are we in Tennessee this week?  For my graduation present of course!  My parents, being the fabulous people they are, gave me two options:  A) Graduation Party B) Graduation Vacay.  Because I love to travel I picked the latter option.  Traveling is just good for the soul.  I think anytime you can take yourself out of your comfort zone and experience another culture you should.  So when they told me I could pick where I wanted to go I picked Nashville and Dollywood!  I am totally OBSESSED with all things country music especially my beloved Dolly Parton.  Her Heartstrings tape was one of my first tapes (God I'm old...I had a tape player...) and I read her children's book Coat of Many Colors when I was a little girlie.  I have since read her other books and adored her other cd's as well.

Well, staying true to our family's nature of, "Why Not?" we opted to drive down to Tennessee instead of flying.  Logistically it made more sense because once we got to Tennessee we would have to rent a car and drive around Pigeon Forge then drive the three hours to Nashville anyway.

Ride in a car with your family for 10 hours they say.  It will be fun they say.

Welp, true to form we had an itinerary.  We were supposed to leave at 8:30 am after we dropped off Cody at the boarders.  This put us arriving in VA (at Dylan's school to drop off his golf clubs) at 1:30 pm.  Well, we left NJ at 10:30 am.  We arrived in VA around 4:30.  We dropped off the clubs, ate dinner (at my favorite place...TEXAS ROADHOUSE!) then were on the road again by 7.  We drove from VA to Pigeon Forge and arrived around 12:20 am.  WOW!! LONGEST DAY EVER!

However, I did learn some things:

1) Packing FRIENDS seasons is a great way to pass the time...until your computer dies and/or your brother falls asleep on you.

2) When said brother falls asleep on you, use his back as a reading desk and catch up on Glamour and People.

3) Jamming and car dancing to country music always makes the time pass...it still was 10 hours but it felt like only 9.5 hours!

4) Pigeon Forge has some AWESOMELY KITSCHY THINGS TO SEE!!
These things include a movie set size Titanic Museum, A Ripley's Believe it or Not Aquarium, a King Kong (enormous) on the Empire State Building exhibit? (I'm not really sure what it's exact purpose is but it was cool), A Lumberjack Feud themed show, A Christmas Village (EEK!  Sooooo exciting), and about 5 As Seen On TV stores...I don't know why a town needs 5 but I'm glad they have them!)

Dollywood!!

AHHHHHHHH!! Today I'm so pumped because we went to Dollywood!  I have a slight ginormous love of Dolly Parton.  I just think she's fabulous!  She's blonde (YAY), loves sequins (YAY), country music royalty, and totally sweet!  I adore her books and always have.  She's just a nice person.

Dollywood History 101:

Take out your #2 pencils y'all we're going back to the year 1986.

Dolly Parton opened the theme park Dollywood in 1986.  Previously this park was known as Rebel Railroad and was an amusement park that followed in the Smokey Mountain Theme.  The park had several other owners and names.  Dolly bought the park in 1986 and renamed it Dollywood.  She splashed several butterflies on the place and added just the right amount of glitter/sequin/blonde ambition/and Tennessee Smokey Mountain charm to the place and even cooler?  The park employs 3,000 people!  That is a huge number folks!  Dolly created jobs, opportunities, and a community attraction that is Tennessee's largest ticketed tourist attraction!  Blonde Ambition?  I think so!

Dollywood was FANTASTIC!

In true Dylan fashion, we almost got kicked out of Dollywood while riding on the tramcar.  Right after Robert, our tramcar conductor finished explaining how Dollywood is a nice, safe, family place, Robert gave the parks' hours.  He messed up the hours and another conductor corrected him.  Robert apologized and stated the correct hours.  Dylan, my dear dear brother, says, "DAMMIT ROBERT!"  He didn't say it very loudly but loud enough (and since we rode in the first row on the tramcar the sound reverberated off the plexiglass) that Robert answers him with an, "I heard that.  I'm watching you!"  Of course Robert was kidding, but it was enough to embarrass us!

Upon entry we discovered some very non-NJ happenings.

1) Free Parking!  The usual $10 fee was waved today for some reason...score!

2) Bags are not checked!  This struck us all as a little weird because in NJ your bag can be checked anywhere.  Movie theaters have even been known to check your bags.

I thought it would be kitschy and I was pumped because God knows I love a theme (as does the rest of my famsquad) but the rides and attractions were all actually solid! We rode on America's first "Winged Coaster" the Wild Eagle.  Then, we rode on the Tennessee Tornado, Thunderhead (a wooden roller coaster.  I'm not a huge wooden roller coaster typa girl but it was pretty good.) and a flight ride for my dad. My momma likes the roller coasters and my dad likes the high rides.  We always tease my dad because when we go on the roller coasters he "holds the stuff and sleeps on the bench,".  Yes lady and gents my dad is one of those people.  He holds our stuff like someone is going to steal it.  (Onlychildproblems)

*Side Story*

When we go on vacation my parents completely shift roles!

Deb becomes easy going, spendthrift, and carefree.  My dad becomes a control freak and stressing out over the most mundane and easily fixable stuff.  I don't know why this happens but Vacation Deb & Vacation Dad come out on every trip!

Back to the Main Story.

After we rode the rides we went to the GAC show.  It was a really good 45 minute show featuring Tammy Cochran.  The show's 6 main singers (3 girls and 3 guys) sang abbreviated versions of Blake Shelton's Honey Bee, Miranda Lambert's Over You, Jason Aldean/Luke Bryan/Eric Church's Only Way I Know, Eric Church's Springsteen, Carrie Underwood's Blown Away, Lee Brice Woman Like You, Toby Keith's Made in America, Taylor Swift's We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, and Montgomery Gentry's My Town.

Next we got lunch.  Since I love seeing Philly things all over the world, I got the "Philly Chicken Cheesesteak".  It wasn't a Philly cheesesteak but it was good.  It wasn't made with Amoroso Rolls and the peppers and onions were mashed up with the chicken.  But it was still really good, especially since it was theme park food.  (There also is a HUGE replica of the Liberty Bell in Pigeon Forge!)

Next we shopped, rode the railroad, and ate cupcakes as big as my head.  Seriously, these thins were enormous!

We then went on Dolly's tour bus!  EEK!  So exciting!  We saw where she lived when she was on tour in the early 2000s.  We saw her wig, clothes, vanity, and bunks.

We made an early retire to go to dinner (it started raining.  BOO!  At least we got to see all the things we wanted to before the rain) and guess what we saw at the Blue Moose?  More Philly Cheesesteak references!  I didn't get another cheesesteak but I did get a buffalo chicken sandwich.  Very yum!

Here are our pictures from the day!

Back To Reality

I don't know about you but when I go on vacation I go hard.  I sleep less than 6 hours a night (Bedtime?  What's that noise?)  Healthy, organic, natural food??!! PUUHLEEEASE bring on the cheesedrenched, wing sauce covered, sugary soda, sugar and chocolate filled decadence at every meal! Working out?!  Um, come again?  Well, thankfully Tennessee has tons of hills so maybe I walked off a leeeetle bit of what I ate?  Maybe, possibly, please?!  Haha probably not though.

So last night, er this morning, we arrived in NJ at 4 am.  I will take full responsibility that I was egging on the drivers (Dylan, Daddy, Deb) to keep driving through the night so we could have our own beds and not have to be in another hotel one more night but this folks is a BAD IDEA!  Being in a car for 16 hours is not something this girl likes.  I felt like I was being forced to be in Cirque du Soleil!  No Bueno!  I don't do cramped car rides, I don't do road trips.  Call me a princess, a prissy girl, that's fine!  I'll own it!  I like comfort.  I like planes.  I like leg room!  For the record, in car yoga will get you yelled at.  Just a little heads up, you're welcome!

After waking up at, oh you know, the crack of dawn, I decided I really couldn't eat anymore sugar, fatty, junk.  Does this happen to anyone else?  I literally am repulsed by junk food (yes even my beloved chocolate and burritos and soda) and I crave salads.  So I got a salad and drank 3 bottles of water in just as many hours.  Then, I Instagrammed my food pic (dorky I know but I really do like to see what other people eat) and my friend texted me that she was doing the same after her vacay.  Good to know I'm in good company!

Next, my body craved physical activity so I did an hour of pilates, (do you guys know about Pop Pilates and Blogilates?  Cassey Ho does amazing youtube videos with HAAAARD workouts that make you sweat your little booties off) followed by an hour of catching up with Real Housewives of Orange County while lifting and doing a leg pyramid.  Now I need a run!  (Who would have ever thought I would be dying for a 5 mile run?  Not this girl!)  After this is abs!

P.S. we're having pizza for dinner.  I don't even want a soda to go with it.  I also only plan on eating a very small piece because I just can't eat anymore junk.

I've planned very healthy meals for the rest of my weekend as well. Salad tomorrow for lunch (my new obsession is the Panera Chicken Cobb salad sans bacon and eggs, but yes to avocado) and an apple.  Tomorrow night will be sushi!

Tomorrow I'll be running, doing my new favorite leg workout Tabata (!!) and some pilates and abs.

As much as I loved being on vacay for the past 2 weeks (ahhh bliss) I'm happy to be home in NJ!  Happy to be eating normally!  And happy to be working out again!

xoxo,

Erin

New Orleans 2013!!

“America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans.
Everywhere else is Cleveland.”- Tennessee Williams

Laissez les bon temps roulez!

This is the trip I look forward to all year!  The food, the people, the culture, the drinks, the music!  I love it all!  Every year I visit one of my best best friends from high school who goes to school down in NOLA.  (LUCKY!)  Last year I went to NOLA and it was fabulous!  This year I knew I had to go back.  This year I was more prepared for the heat, Bourbon, everything!  We actually lucked out and had a great 3 days.  Not too hot at all.  So here's what we did:

Monday:

Riding the Street Car Down St. Charles!

Arrived in NOLA at 11:30 and we quickly went to Squeal.  Squeal is a fabulous BBQ place with traditional southern BBQ.  Living in NJ we have BBQ but it's nothing like this!  Squeal has a smoker right out front!  You're not in Jersey anymore!  The food was dalish!  I had smoked chicken with traditional BBQ sauce, corn maque choux, and potato salad.  We got jalapeño hush puppies which were a FABULOUS idea!  They are served with honey butter and not too hot.  I like hot food but I like to be able to enjoy my food and not be overwhelmed by the spiciness.  This was the perfect amount of spicy and sweet!  I definitely recommend this place!

Next we went to Bourbon Street for some Pat O'Brien's hurricanes.  We arrived via Street Car.  The best mode of transportation ever.  Jersey public transit is full of crazy, dirty, gross, cursing, angry people.  Not in NOLA!  Everyone takes the street car because it's convenient and cheap.  Yes this place is a tourist trap but it does have some yummy drinks!  There is a beautiful outdoor patio where you can sit, drink, and eat free popcorn!  Can't get better, right?  My hurricane was fantastic...I could only drink half because it was sooooo big!

Next we walked around the French Quarter.  We looked at Tennessee Williams' house, William Faulkner's house, St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, walked by the Mississippi River and looked for haunted houses.

For dinner we went to Channing Tatum's bar Saints and Sinners (swoon).  Usually celebrity restaurants are goofy, over the top, kitschy, the food is mehh, everything is overpriced, the list goes on and on.  But Saints  & Sinners was totally different.  It was very beautiful inside.  It was boudoir themed and all the drinks had cutesy sexy names.  The walls had pictures of Channing as a gangster and cameo profiles of women with themed hair.  It was fantastic!  The food was delicious!  I had crab cakes on top of a crisped baguette with special sauce on it!  Fantastic!  It wasn't overpriced at all.  The drinks were a little pricey but it's vacation so splurge right?!  I had a drink called Silk Panties.  It was fruity and just fabulous!

Saints & Sinners

My crab cakes & Zach's burger

Next we walked down to Cafe du Monde for traditional beignets.  We each ate a whole order (3) no guilt!  We met Zach's friends here for our delicious treats!

Cafe Du Monde's famous beignets!

Tuesday:

Since this was my only full day in NOLA we wanted to make the most of it.

Zach tolerating me being a total tourist and driving the street car!

Zach created a monster and introduced me to Crepes a la Carte!  TO DIE!!!  I had a sweet crepe with Nutella, caramel apples, and strawberries.  I died!  Died and went to chocolate lover's heaven!  Did I care that I had chocolate running down my face and hands?  No!

WW2 Museum!  The types of planes that flew on the air strike in Normandy!

France's gift to USA for being kick ass in WWII!  It's a replica of the Liberty Bell!  Love when Philly things pop up in unexpected places!

Next we rode the street car to the WW2 museum.  Since I'm a huge history nerd this was right up my alley!  We walked all around and watched a long movie about the D-Day Invasion.  On our way from the street car we got caught in a huge traditional NOLA down pour.  It usually rains everyday in NOLA, the length of the storm and severity vary, and I should have been smarter and brought my new umbrella I bought specifically for this occasion, but alas I left it at home.

Next we walked (we walk all the time.  Last year we walked 20 miles in one day!  This time it was about 10 miles a day) to Stanley's in Jackson Square and had Po' Boys!  This place is known for their Po' Boys and desserts including homemade ice cream and sodas!  I did not participate in the ice cream eating because I'm allergic...wahhh.  I had a fried shrimp Po' Boy and I can't say enough nice things about this place.  The waiters were all beyond great and attentive and the food was the best!  Highly recommended!

Next, we went to a Haunted History Tour.  We went on the Ghost Tour!  Last year we went on the Cemetery Tour.  This year we went on the Ghost Tour.  I liked this one better.  Maybe because the weather was better, but I like ghosts best.  I like this tour group because they teach you a little bit of history and literature as you go.  We saw The LaLaurie house, the Jackson hotel, and Mr. B's bar.  It was a great tour!  Our tour guide was fantastic and funny and goofy and just the best best best!

LaLaurie mansion!

Next we went back to Zach's and picked up some of his housemates to celebrate a birthday at Sucre! Sucre is on Magazine St. and has delicious (overpriced) desserts.  I had a brownie with chocolate sauce and nuts. Great place for a birthday dessert party!
inside of Sucre!  So cute!

Next we went home and played Mille Bornes (1000 miles)!  It took me a while for me to get the hang of it but I got it!

Wednesday:

We had an early lunch at Stein's Deli on Magazine.  We went here last year on my last day, too.  I got turkey and cheese with lettuce and tomato.  It was really good!  I pulled a blonde and didn't realize there was free water and bought sparkling water.  Womp Womp Womp.

It was raining so we went back home and just hung out.  Next, I NEEDED a crepe before we went to the airport.  I got a Nutella & apple/strawberry crepe again because I loved it!

Next it was off to the airport!  I always am sad when I leave because I lerve NOLA and hanging out with Zach.  But there is always next year!

See ya next year NOLA!!

xoxo,

Erin

What The Phillies Game Is Not

Over my years as a baseball fan and frequent CBP attendee I have noticed some peculiar behavior that I think needs to be remedied.  Here is my list!

What the Phillies Game is Not:

 1)   Prom…leave the maxis at home ladies.  Yes you look gorgeous.  Yes your Instagram fans will “like” your selfies, BUT Citizens Bank Park is a place for jerseys, shorts, and hats.  If you want to impress a guy at the game, learn the game.

  2)   The Beach…no need for bikinis at the ball park please.  I’m trying to eat my chicken fingers here!

   3)   The office…come on how hard is it to throw a jersey in the back of your Bentley.  We all know your super important and just came from probably the world’s largest merger, but come on, you know you’re going to the game.

   4)   Da Club…tops and shorts should cover your totties and your eh hem…

   5)   A place to support a team that is not playing…I thought this was self explanatory until I saw multiple people wearing random baseball, football, hockey, and basketball accoutrements to the Phillies/Giants game.  Pick a side…you don’t have full liberty to wear any team you want.  You have two options:  The Phillies or whoever they are playing.

   6)   A time to wear your stilettoes…seriously?  The nosebleed section is hiiiiiiiiiggggghhhhhhhhh.  I consider myself to be in pretty good shape and I still get winded walking up 4 flights of concrete steps.  No one wants to fall out of the cheap seats.  That’s not cute.  Don’t do wedges either because it’s dangerous. There is spilled soda, beer, ketchup…you will fall and no one wants that.  Stick to sneakers, flip flops (even though I think it’s gross because you should shield your toes from the ground) or Sperry’s.

   7)   A place for Crocs.  Just…ugh…people need to stop making them.  They’re like fetch, they’re NEVER going to happen!  Put them in your closet.  Lock them away.  Let them die in dignity!

   8)   A time to talk about your sock drawer…seriously I sat in front of a guy who was dealing with the dilemma of what to do with your navy sock and your black sock.  This isn’t an 8th inning dilemma.  An 8th inning dilemma is how are we gonna keep our lead.

   9)   A place for people who get offended by booing.  We’re Philly, we boo ANYONE/EVERYONE, get used to it.

   10)                  Fancy Food.  Baseball games require fried food and soda.  And cotton candy.  That is it!!  No sushi, no chicken chow mein, no salads.  EVER.

   11)                  A place for reading.  This is not a library or your quiet study where you can curl up with The Bronte sisters and sip Chamomile tea.  This is a baseball game, leave your Kindle at home.

   12)                  A place for Papelbon to blow Cole Hamels 8th inning shut out.

Notice the hat, jeans, Phillies insignia.

*Yes I do have make up on and curled hair.  I'm doing this because I understand that the general public deserves to see my best self and I would not subject them to the curmudgeon and troll that I am when I go au natural.  You're WELCOME!

What I Think About When I Run

So here is a real life list of everything I thought about while running last night (in the nice weather!!)

  • I'm gonna be so skinny!  I'm gonna be so toned!  I'm gonna be so healthy!  Because I am running!  (this was sing songy while I was running down my street)
  • OMG Luke Bryan is on!  Ughhhhh what do I do?!  I can't stop here and dance on the street to "Country Girl Shake it For Me" because I'm running...but I want to...ugh internal struggle?!!  I will just play this at home and shake it there!  Acceptable!
  • Am I running right?  Is this how you're supposed to run?
  • I'm gonna beat that car!  I'm gonna beat that car!  Look at me!  I'm running fast!  Bet that Camry can't beat me to the Stop Sign!  Haha I'm gonna win!
  • Okay, Camry you beat me...you got lucky...
  • I wonder how far I have run?
  • Ewww gross, creepy guys stop telling me to "Werk that"
  • What does "werk that" mean?
  • How does one "werk that"?
  • Why do people fence in their front yards in suburbia?  Who do they think wants to stand in their front yard?
  • You have weeds in your front yard...you don't need a fence to keep people out.
  • What am I gonna wear tomorrow?
  • UHHJJJHGGHHH I hate running! If I never eat chocolate/candy/soda/cookies again do I have to run?
  • If a murderer started chasing me could I outrun them?
  • OOOOHHH I like this song!
  • Stop singing, you are in public!
  • Whoa!  Oh, that's the dead tree stump that scares me every freakin' time!
  • That's a pretty car!
  • What time do I have to be at work tomorrow?
  • What am I gonna be for Halloween?
  • Why did they name that baby George?
  • Seriously STOP SINGING!
  • Do I know that lady?  I don't know...just wave to her in case you do.  Manners Matter Erin!
  • AHHHHH CATTTTT!  Gonna run faster now because I am so scared!
  • If I was on tour as a country singer what song would I cover?  DUH, easy!  Garth Brooks "I Got Friends In Low Places"and "Fancy" and "9-5".
  • I wonder what Josh Hartnett is doing now...
  • Running makes me want to eat chocolate...a lot of chocolate...Ugh this is counterproductive!
  • Oh there's my street!
  • Allllllll done...until tomorrow...

Running is not my favorite thing to do but it does provide a certain amount of clarity for me.
