You Know Your Parent's An Educator When

Hello lovelies,

This weekend mia famiglia went to visit my brother at school in Virginia.  Such a fun time!  More on that post later.  Long car rides and I have a rocky relationship with each other.  On the one hand I love the quiet alone time with just the radio, a good magazine, family chats, and laughs.  On the other hand I can’t stand being contained in an SUV for 6 hours.  I do get some really good soul searcher done on these car rides though.  I don’t know if that is for better or for worse.  Sometimes you need to stop analyzing your life and just live it.  Don’t think too much is one of my 2014 New Year’s Resolutions.  Inevitably Deb and I will get in a discussion about education and how to be a better teacher.  I love these convos because my mom is such a well of knowledge.  She’s been a speech pathologist for over 30 years and is fantastic!  I admire her and her work ethic.  While we were talking I got the idea about things that Educator’s Kids Get.  Here is my list:

1) As a youngster you were checked to make sure you were hitting your developmental milestones on that exact month marker.
2) Everyone wanted to play school at your house because you had actual old teacher’s manuals, an actual attendance book, and an actual seating chart.
3) On the 15th and 30th of every month you were living large!!  Those were pay days and you knew that your educator parent was coming home telling you, you guys “were going out to dinner”!
4) You were at those teacher contract negotiation rallies wearing your I Support Public Education t-shirt and carrying your Settle Now signs while proudly marching with the other union members.
5) When other people bash unions, you come up with 20 good reasons and benefits of unions.
6) You’ve gone to political marches at your state capital.
7) You ate pasta every night for the last ½ of August waiting for that September 1st pay day.  (Not really, but you know that you’re not “going out to dinner”.
8)  Your parent was a celebrity in your area because every time you went to Target or the grocery store your parent was recognized and bombarded with hugs and love.
9) You saw that and wanted your future students to feel that strongly about you.  Seriously when we see my mom’s students it’s so beautiful because they love her!
10) You know teachers don’t get summers off.  Nor are they home at 3:30…more like 7.
11)  When/if a teacher called your house, emailed your parents, or wrote a note home, you knew YOU were in trouble.  There was never a discussion of if you were wrongly accused or not.  No, you were the one at fault.
12)   Barnes & Noble was your treat when you finished your behavior chart.
13) You have a cabinet full of mugs that your parent has received from past students.  You know that your parent would never dare throw away these mugs because they remind them of that “special student”.  (You also know that you will never buy your child’s teacher a mug or candle because you yourself have seen the volume of mugs and candles teacher’s receive J)
14)   If you were bad you didn’t get to go the library on Sasturday for new books.
15)   You participated in every Summer Reading Program at your local library.  (usually you also won them because reading was a scheduled part of your daily routine)
16)  You went to preschool and loved it!
17)  You were happy when school functions and plays were at night so that your educator parent could come.
18)  You knew that on Back To School Night and Open House Night, you were getting PIZZA FOR DINNER!!! Yay!!!  P.S. this still happens even when you’re 22.
19)  You really were forced to do your daily 30 minutes of homework a night in elementary school.
20)  You got tummy time as a baby.
21)  You had a picture schedule growing up that was clearly posted in your bedroom.
22)  You never saw your educator parent during IEP season.  IEP season always stunk because that meant my dad would cook.  This lasted about 3 days (and 3 overcooked tortellini soup dinners) before we got take out.
23)  You yourself are probably a teacher or future teacher.  Because what other job is as rewarding or important?   Answer?  Nothing.
24)  You never had a problem scheduling observations during your own Teacher Candidate Training.
25)  You waited and counted down the days to Bring Your Child To Work Day because you got to pass out the paper and be your parent’s special helper.  No one passed out paper quite like me!  Rocked that!
26)  Children’s books were where you sought out guidance.  Your educator parent probably talked out the issue with you thoroughly and then handed you a perfectly chosen and aligned piece of literature with a character for you to emulate.
27)  You still refer to children’s book’s characters for guidance and moral support.
28)  You wrote to authors as a child.
29)  Your teachers were your lifelong idols.
30)  Your play room was set up in centers.
31)  You had gender neutral toys to support fine and gross motor skills, social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
32)  You entered school knowing how to read.
33)  You know that educators are the hardest working people in the biz.
34)  You parent had a behavior chart that you adhered to religiously.
35)  You went to Disney over NJEA teacher’s convention.
36)  You were the first person to bring back your field trip parent chaperone form because you knew your educator parent had to apply and be approved for their personal days.
37)  You never went to summer camp.
38)  You couldn’t imagine (and wouldn’t want to) being raised by anyone other than an educator.

This is just a short tongue in cheek look at the life of a "teacher kid" and I really could go on and on about the perks of being raised by an educator.

Have a fabulous night,

   Erin

Subbing at my Middle School Alma Mater...Vindication From Dorkdom At LAST!!

Hey!!

Last week I got a call to sub.  Usually I am a strictly a K-5 sub.  Middle schoolers and high schoolers scare the begessus out of me.  The sub caller asked me to sub 6th grade...Deep breaths Erin, deep breaths.  I agreed to it, but I was nervous!  See in my head all middle schoolers are actually 7 feet tall, furry, hairy, beasts!  False.  Middle schoolers are still babies.  They're so small and little.  I took one look at my homeroom and was like, phew, I can do this.  They're not so scary.  I think I was visualizing them as how I saw middle schoolers when I was 12.  You know, the tall, giant, ominous silhouettes of the "big 8th graders" holding bats ready to prey on the nubile, weak, sixth graders.  I remember fearing the 8th graders because they were taller than me (well the girls were, the boys were still teeny tiny), more mature than me, allowed to cross Rt. 130, had babysitting jobs, wore make up, had hair straighteners, and went to boy-girl parities!  All of these were enough to petrify a braces wearing, acne laden, glasses sporting, denim overall loving, 12 year old Erin.  After I taught English class (I was subbing for my old homeroom teacher...EEK I'm old!) I realized that there were a few great bonuses to subbing in your middle school.  There is solid vindication to coming back to work in your alma mater middle school when you are no longer less awkward.

1) I got to wear sleeveless!  See DMS had a strict dress code and you could not show your shoulders.

2) I got to wear a dress!  Being 5'8" and a size 0 in middle school meant that all of my skirts, dresses, shorts, were always too short to be school appropriate.  Your skirt had to be finger tip length.  Well, my arms were always too long to allow for that noise.  As my own form of 12-14 year old protest I wore jeans every day.  I really showed them! :)

3) I got to walk in the hall without a pass!

4) I can talk in the hall!

5) I can run in the hallway...if I am buzzing to a class, not just for funsies.  Okay, I did do a little run down the hall because it was fun and necessary and before now forbidden.

6) I can say, "The bell doesn't dismiss you, I dismiss you!" complete with glarey eyes.  Of course I didn't do this because I'm not a complete and utter douche.

7) I didn't have to change for gym!  Talk about awkward self-consciousness overload.

8) I didn't have to go to Algebra.  Letters and numbers in math?  Ain't nobody got time for that!

9) I can talk in the library!

10) Snacks cost like 80 cents!  This is a great deal!!

11) Water in the lunch room is $1!!  At college, it's clearly $2.29!

12) No longer facing the epic daily battle of Erin versus Locker 449.  My locker liked to embarrass me by not opening without me panicking and thinking I would committ the biggest life sin ever...being late for class.

13) No more fear of being late to class...because I stay in the same room!

14) I can text during my lunch and prep!  *Actually there was no texting in my middle school days*

15) I get to enter into the intriguing wooden door enclosed sanctum that is the teacher's lounge.

16) Never fearing I would miss my bus and be stranded at school.  *Side note* I was not allowed to cross the major highway that divided my development from my middle school and I feared that if I missed the bus I'd be stranded until my dad could come get me.  P.S. my dad worked overnight during that time and would have been able to pick me up, no problem.  I'm just crazy and was afraid I wouldn't get home.

17) I'm no longer self-conscious like I was then.

There were some cons though...

1) I didn't get to play Oregon Trail.  Mostly because I wasn't the computer teacher's sub, but also because the school no longer has computers bought in 1998.  Ahhh 1998, a simpler time, a time when computers were compatible with Oregon Trail.

2) My homework no longer takes 10 minutes.

3) I felt old because some of my old ballet students were in 8th grade...

4) I no longer got to read who hearts who, or decode the initials of who and who were 4EVER.  This made my inner 7th grader's heart sad.

5) I realized it would be completely inappropriate to cover my face, neck, and other exposed skin with Bath & Body Works Art Stuff Body Glitter.  Not because it would clog my pores, smell like cheap raspberries, I'm 22, or that the glitter would literally catch every glimmer of incandescent light.  No.  Not for any of those reasons, but because it looks bad. It was a terrible look, but I rocked it for 3 years!

In summation, subbing at your old middle school is kind of like running into your old boyfriend when you look amazeballs!  It's like, Oh, yes, hi.  Oh yes I do not have acne, braces, glasses, an affinity for scrunchies or denim overalls, now.  Middle school wasn't so bad the second time around.  I wouldn't go back in time so I could relive my middle school awkwardness, but I wouldn't mind subbing there.

I hope everyone gets to return to their middle school to show the school that yes, behind every dorky, acne-having, glasses wearing, braces having, awkward girl there can be hope.  One day the braces will come off, the acne will clear up, the glasses will become contacts, and you will be less awkward.

xoxo,

Erin

Just in case you were wondering how dorky I looked as a middle schooler.
I'm the one in the top row, 3rd brownie from the left.

I'm the awkward girl who wore a white dress to a wedding.
All the way to the right. Sixth grade awkwardness in all it's
glory :)

No Fear Vegan Eats

Heeeeeyyyyyyy!!

Do you remember those No Fear Shakespeare books from high school?  I do!  They had the modern day translation on the left and the real Shakespearean text on the right side of the page.  They made reading Shakespeare more digestible to those who were a little nervous about jumping in full force.  GET THEE TO A NUNNERY!  Sorry...that's my favorite Shakespearean line.  Okay back to food and Philly fun!  Well HipCityVeg is the No Fear Veganland!  It's real vegan food but with non-vegan sounding menu items.
So last weekend my lovely long-time-no-see roomie and I went to one of our favorite places ever--Philly<3  My love affair with this city is no secret.  I phind it so phabulous because it is the loveliest marriage of history, shopping, glamour, sports, and restaurants.  I love seeing Cara because she is soooo funny & I miss her as my roommate!  Growing up I specifically wanted a brother because I did not want to share my room...EVER!  I like my own space, my own  room, and I'm definitely not the biggest sharer of my personal stuff.  I just like my own stuff, you know?  Well Cara and I are perfect roomies because we get that about each other.  She gets that I need my own space and I get that she does, too.  We work well together.  Sometimes I think it's hard to live with your best friend because it's just too much time together.  Well, Cara and I lived together for 3 years and we totally worked/never got tired of each other.  I'm sure that I got on her nerves but she never said anything.  I miss having her 6 feet away from  me at all times.

Anyway, I digress.  We wanted to try something new for dinner and we wanted veggies!  We tried vegan food!  We went to HipCityVeg for dinner.  Let me tell you...this was fantastic!  The BEST DINNER I'VE HAD IN A LOOOOOONG TIME!!  I had a Groothie (the cure to my missing green juice from the farmer's market) and a Buffalo Bella!  Oh my LAWD it was daaalish!  Goodness!  Hold on, I'm dreaming about it right now...okay I'm back!  I lerved it!  The best way I can describe it is a little vegan burger from heaven!  It was a "crispy portobella, celery slaw, tomato & buffalo sauce" (http://hipcityveg.com/menu/)!!  The burger was AMAZEBALLS!  It was a giant mushroom!!!  I love buffalo sauce and I think we could be very happy together!  I'm definitely going back!  I think I'm gonna stick to my typical Erin maxim of always eating the same thing every time I go to a restaurant.  Maybe I'll try something new...but probably not because the Buffalo Bella was AMAZEBALLS!

I know that the idea of vegan food scares some people but I want to squelch those that are fearful of vegan eats!  Don't be scared!  Was it my beloved chicken burger with feta?  No.  Was it equally dalish just different?  Yup!  Don't be scared of vegan food.  It's not gross and mushy and blecky.  It's fantastic!  It is so flavorful I didn't even miss the turkey or chicken.

HipCityVeg is a cool urban place located in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood.  It's more of a takeout place so we decided to picnic in the Park.  After eating our mucho deliciouso dinner we took pictures (obvi) and we found a cute frog statue!  We decided to do a One Frog Closer to Prince Charming themed photo shoot!  So cute!  While Cara was posing and be cute I saw my biggest.  darkest.  scariest.  most feared. life fear.  EVER!  RATS!  Mice/Rats/Vermin/Rodents are my biggest fear in life!  In college there was a mouse in my apartment and even though I never saw it, and it was contained to the pantry, I NEVER WENT IN THAT PANTRY AGAIN!  (I also have a fear of cats but that's a different story)  So I screamed and did the Erin's Afraid Pose aka I curl up in the fetal position while still standing.  It's...um...interesting to see!  Well, I must have screamed loudly because everyone in the park starting laughing at me.  Womp Womp.  I'm glad I made everyone else laugh.  Winning, right?  So a few minutes later we changed locations in the park and were taking a Fred Astaire Singing In The Rain-esque photo, when an onlooker said,  "Look out for the RAT!" I cowered again in fear and she laughed.  LAUGHED at me!!  There was no rat, but she didn't need to embarrass me on purpose.  Not cool.  Anyway...then we walked around and went down to the world famous LOVE statue and took some shots.  Cara was joined by a sweet teenage skateboarder.  He posed just like her.  So sweet!!

Philly was Phab as always!  I love my city and I can't wait to go back!  I'm having a Big Philly Weekend in a few weeks and I can't wait to explore the arts and cultural side of the City of Brotherly Love!

Have a Great Monday!!

-Erin

Things I Find More Offensive (Should be Unconstitutional) Than Marriage Equality

I don't own the rights to this picture.  I wish I owned the rights to the fabulous boas though...

So NJ is going to allow Marriage Equality?!

FIIIIIIINNNNAAAALLLEEEEYYYYY!  Congrats to all of my friends who are finally able to marry their loves!  I'm so excited for you and your families!  I've never written a politically charged post before but this one will be (kinda...but still funny)!  I think that marriage should be between two people who love each other.  Love is the same regardless of gender/sex.  As a 20 something who has been on her fair share of bad, listless, and some good (obvi) dates, I understand that love is hard to find!  It is a miracle that you find someone who loves you enough to legally bind themselves to you FOORRR EEHHHVER.  (The Sandlot reference, thankyaverymuch!)  If and when you are blessed enough to find this, I think that you should be able to marry them.  My personal feelings are that marriage is not and should not be judged by politicians in Trenton or D.C.  Let's be completely honest and real here, politicians do not have perfect marriages (or even faithful ones) and...how does anyone else's marriage really affect theirs or anyone else's daily lives?  They don't.

Below I have compiled a list of things that I find more offensive, therefore should be unconstitutional, than marriage equality.  (These are done in no particular order)  This is simply a list of things politicians may want to direct their efforts towards instead of attacking love.

1.)  Crocs on adults.
2.) Homeless Veterans- No one who has EVER served our country should be homeless, hungry, thirsty, uncared for.  That is unAmerican.
3.) Papelbon losing a lead.
4.) Cheating on your spouse.
5.) Politicians making laws about education.
6.) Children going hungry at school.
7.) Abuse.
8.) No parking at the Ed building.
9.) Macy's coupons not allowing you to buy ANYTHING because they are all listed on the *Exclusions* category.
10.) Girls who wear make up at the gym.
11.) Bad pick up lines...or any pick up lines...just leave them at home.
12.) Real Housewives of NJ not being On Demand.
13.) Insurance companies denying parents of students with disabilities access to Augmentative Communication Devices.
14.) Chocolate should be free.
15.) Fresh fruits, veggies, and lean protein should be available to all people.  From living in Trenton I can attest to the fact that Shop Rite's in cities do NOT receive the same level of fresh fruits, veggies, and other produce.  These foods are NOT as fresh/healthy/eatable as their suburban counterparts.  NOT fair!  Multiple times I would cut into an apple or pear and it was deeeesgusting!
16.) TCNJ accepting blecky guys.
17.) Guys who don't pay on dates.
18.) People who don't teach their sons to open doors for ladies.
19.) Crop Tops.  They just look trashy...even on skinny minnies.
20.) 22 year olds are not welcome in the Bouncy Castle at Fall Festivals!  This is an injustice...can't a girl just bounce?!  Included in this category:  not being allowed to order Children's Meals and ride ponies.
21.) People who diss teachers
22.) Minimum wage is tooooooo low!
23.) Abuse of power.
24.) People with el zippo sense of humor.
25.) People who pretend that they don't know (but they know) that they are cutting the line.  We're on to you!
26.) People who oppose equal rights for women.
27.) People who use too much hair gel.
28.) People who judge others at the gym...this is a place where people are working on themselves...this should be a welcoming place!
29.) Girls who dress up in maxi dresses for sporting events.  Just STAAAP!
30.) Negative Nancies and Nathans.
31.) That pumpkin flavored things can only be purchased between September and December.  People NEED pumpkin in the summer!
32.) Racism--especially when people freak out about a Cheerios commercial...Love is love people!
33.) Not having adequate access to literature and books.
34.) Sending American jobs overseas.
35.) People who don't support our troops.
36.) People who judge those holding car concerts...
37.) Cutting coupons...just put it in the computer...or let me show the email equivalent...Let's be GREEN!
38.) Keeping a minimum balance in my checking account.  It's my money!  If I want to have $3.38 in my account that's my beeeznisss!
39.) $12.50 movie tickets...come on you can buy the movie for $25...
40.) Cyberbullying.
41.) The R-Word.

I do not own the rights to this picture.  I do own the rights to thinking it's haaaalareeeus!

This is just a simple list of things that would be better outlets for politicians' frustrations.  The world is an ever changing place full of all kinds of kinds (Miranda Lambert ladies and gents) and we need to accept people for who they are and what they want to be.  Remember, only 100 years ago women were not allowed the right to vote, people of "color" aka anyone who was not a WASP was not allowed to own property, vote, hold certain military ranks, interracial marriage, hold certain jobs, be elected to public office.  These sound ridiculous now.  Also, Kim Kardashian was married for oh a hot minute and that marriage was more of an "offense to marriage" than any marriage between gay Americans that I have ever seen.

I hope y'all have a blessed Sunday,

Erin

Vineyard Vignettes

Bonjourno Amicis!

This past weekend I went to a wine festivale!  Did I go to Napa? No.  Did I go to Italia Wine Country?  No...you're close though...Did I go to Burgundy?  Nope...no passport needed!  I went to Shamong...yup right in the heart of South Jersey!  Mia famiglia went to Valenzano Winery for their 2013 Wine Fest.  Let me tell you this was the BEST IDEA EVER!  Who would have guessed that 25 minutes from my quiet suburban abitazione would be the coolest, chicest little vineyard?!

My brother works at the local liquor store in our town and we have gone to wine tastings there.  We were familiar with the Valenzano brand and have had some sangria from them before.  It was always really really good and definitely a staple at our summer parties.  Let me tell you it's DALISH!

So Saturday we all went to the vineyard as a fundraiser for my dad's friend's charity.  I wanted to dress in theme so I had to had to had to buy a wine colored cami.  (And you thought I was kidding about hearting themes :))  I paired it with my fav Jessica Simpson skinnies, my cowboy boots, a loose belt, and something I got on sale at Gap a few years ago that can only be described as a long, flowy, cream colored, mullet vest.  It's party in the front and business in the back.  It's fabulous but I never know what to wear it with...today I found this vest's calling.  I guess I'll need to go to more Vine Fests to fully let the vest show it's potential ;)

So when you walk in, you are handed a wine glass with the Valenzano V emblazoned on it.  Then you step into what can only be described as pure wine lovers' goodies heaven!  There were tons of vendors who were selling wine accessories!  Wine accessories include (but are not limited to) wine koozies, wine glass slings, wine openers, glasses (my fav chic option-stemless-was in full abundance)  bottle covers, bottle accessories, wine themed tees, tanks, and hats.  The list goes on and on!  Deb bought a wine tasting sling.  I love it!  It has cute little grapes on it...FAB!

Now for the wine...drum roll please....HOLY GOODNESS!  There were about 8 other NJ vendors besides Valenzano Winery there.  Every kinda wine you could imagine was there for us to sample!  Reds, whites, roses...EVERYTHING!  My personal faves:  Valenzano Red, White, & Blue Sangria, Valenzano's Blueberry wine (don't judge), and Valenzano's Apple Cider wine!  These wines are truly the liquid emobiment of September/October in New Jersey!  They taste like what I think fall tastes like: fresh, crisp, cozy, and appley!  Absolutely daVINE!  One of the nonValenzano wine guys was tres rude!  He messed up and poured the wrong type of wine in my glass, then grabbed the cup and poured it out on the ground when he realized his mistake.  (I didn't ask him to do that...I would have drank it)  Then he REFUSED TO SERVE US!  He wouldn't give us any samples!  With a quick eye roll we were off to some friendly vendors.  I did score some extra Valenzano Red, White, & Blue Sangria from a cutey at the Valenzano tent...hey, I'm not going to deny a little extra Sangria...that would be rude ;)

On top of the wine festivities there were helicopter rides, pony rides (only for kids though...NOT FAIR) other craft vendors, food trucks, and lots of...kids?  I was shocked at how many kids were here. I wouldn't bring my kids here because there was nothing for them to do...So they ran around and screamed.  They were kids, what did I expect?  I really thought this was going to be a 21 and older event....WRONGO!

All I can say is that I think this should become a yearly event for us!  We left with two bottles of Valenzano vino and a whole list of Valenzano wines to try at Canal's next time we go.  P.S. you could eat the grapes off the vines...AMAZEBALLS!
